A Strategic Exchange for Growth from June 26th to 29th, 2024, the Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) had the distinct honor of hosting esteemed representatives from the Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) at the scenic Palapye Desert Sands Motel. This highly anticipated strategic benchmarking meeting brought together the leadership of both unions, including the distinguished President Cde Mathews Pocko Key Mberiuana and Assistant General Secretary Paulus Smokie Situmba from MUN. The purpose of this significant gathering was to foster a spirit of collaboration, share invaluable experiences, and learn from each other’s successful practices.

The Mineworkers Union of Namibia generously shared their wealth of best practices across several critical areas, offering invaluable insights that resonated deeply with the BMWU’s aspirations:

Innovative Investment Models: MUN provided a comprehensive overview of their successful investment models, detailing how they have strategically diversified their assets to ensure long-term financial sustainability and generate additional revenue streams for the union. This included discussions on various investment portfolios, risk management, and the benefits of proactive financial planning.

Robust Governance Structures: The Namibian delegation elaborated on their well-established governance structures, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and member participation in decision-making processes. This exchange offered the BMWU practical examples of how to strengthen its own internal controls and ensure effective leadership.

Beneficiation Programs for Members: Perhaps one of the most impactful areas of discussion was MUN’s innovative membership beneficiation programs. These initiatives are designed to directly enhance the welfare and economic empowerment of their members beyond traditional collective bargaining. This included examples of housing schemes, education funds, and entrepreneurial support programs that have tangibly improved the lives of their members. The BMWU leadership absorbed these insights with keen interest, recognizing the immense potential for growth and enhancement within their own operations. The union’s primary objective stemming from this productive exchange is to meticulously analyse and strategically implement similar investment models. The overarching goal is to achieve greater financial independence for the BMWU, thereby securing its long-term viability, while simultaneously expanding and diversifying the benefits and support programs available to its dedicated mine workers. This benchmarking exercise was a testament to the power of regional collaboration and a crucial step towards building a more resilient and impactful union for the future.
